– Hungary is undoubtedly part of the West, and it became so by the decision of King St. Stephen. Hungarians are Europeans, not only in a geographical sense but also in a spiritual sense," president Tamás Sulyok said today in his inauguration speech.

On February 26, the Hungarian National Assembly elected the president of the Constitutional Court Tamás Sulyok as the new president of the republic in a secret vote by the votes of the deputies of the ruling bloc Fidesz-KDNP ((his candidacy was supported by 134 out of 198 deputies sitting in the unicameral National Assembly). After being elected, he took a solemn oath.

Tamás Sulyok was replaced by President Katalin Novák, who announced her resignation on February 10, 2024, following the scandal that broke out when it came to light that the president had pardoned Novák in 2023, a person convicted of participating in the cover-up of pedophilia.
