Polish government introduced border controls due to the influx of illegal migrants via the so-called Balkan route on October 4 2023, initially for ten days. Since then it has repeatedly extended them, a total of six times.

According to the Polish Border Guard in the past two days alone, its members checked a total of 12,600 persons and 6,800 vehicles at the border with Slovakia.
