GUS: Poland's Land Area Increases by Over 121000 Hectares. How is this possible?

Poland's land area has increased by 121106 hectares from 31,272,030 ha to 31,393,136 ha, according to the new data from the Central Statistical Office of Poland (GUS). That is, as if Poland had swallowed up entire Hong Kong.

GUS indicated that the change in the country's surface is related, as in previous years, to the adjustment of the territorial units' borders to the baseline of the territorial sea resulting from the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of January 13, 2017, on the detailed course of the baseline, the outer border of the territorial sea, and the outer border of the contiguous zone of the Republic of Poland.

According to the Central Statistical Office of Poland "changes in this regard were made in 2022 and mainly consisted of including the Puck Bay and a part of the Gdańsk Bay into inland waters, dividing these waters, and assigning them in the Land and Building Register to the territorial units adjacent to them".

In the previous report for 2021 and 2022, Poland also became larger.
