Mateusz Morawiecki at Heidelberg University - "Europe at a historic turning point"
Przegląd prasy

Speaking at the University of Heidelberg, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki continued the traditions of the European duumvirate: France and Germany. Emmanuel Macron gave an important speech in 2017 at the Sorbonne in Paris, and Olaf Scholz last year in Prague at the Charles University. "They both talked mainly about the future of Europe, which, in their opinion, means more EU above all," notes ONDŘEJ ŠMIGOL on the Echo24.cz website. "Morawiecki also spoke mainly about the future organization of the European continent. In this way, he put himself on an equal footing with the French president and the German chancellor. "Poland is currently one of the three most important EU countries" and "is striving for leadership in the European Union."

The Polish Prime Minister delivered a speech at Heidelberg University. The main theme of the speech was Europe at a historic turning point. The Prime Minister also addressed the importance of European values in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. - Europe finds itself at a historic turning point. Even more serious than during the fall of communism. For the most part those changes were peaceful. Today, when the whole world is threatened by a war of Russian aggression, the times of 70 and 80 years ago come to mind - PM Morawiecki said, stressing that Poland never received reparation from Germany for the crimes of World War II, for the destruction, stolen property and treasures of national culture.

"Morawiecki's speech shows above all that the current Polish government has a positive program for the EU, but stands in opposition to the ideas of Paris and Berlin," writes the Czech columnist. "The EU is supposed to be an organization of sovereign states working together, not an organization moving steadily towards greater integration until nation states disappear from it. The EU should proudly claim its historical roots. It should work closely with the US and be its equal partner and not dream of being some kind of counterbalance. The EU must consider Russia as an existential threat, not as a potential trading partner. The Russian invasion of Ukraine proved that the Poles were right on the last point. Maybe in time it will turn out that they have it also in others" - concludes the commentator of the "Echo24" daily.
