Hungarian Cross of Merit for Kornel Morawiecki

On 10 March, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán decorated Kornel Morawiecki, Senior Marshal of the Sejm, with the Silver Hungarian Cross of Merit with Star.

The decoration ceremony took place at the Hungarian Embassy in Warsaw. Those in attendance included the Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, marshals of the Sejm and Senate, and government representatives. The University of Warsaw Choir sang the Hungarian and Polish national anthems.

In his speech, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán underlined the achievements of the senior speaker in the struggle for freedom of Central European countries and emphasized the Christian roots of our continent. The Hungarian Prime Minister recalled the thousand-year history of mutual relations between the two fraternal nations and expressed the opinion that there are only a few places in the world where Hungarians feel as good as in Warsaw.

When expressing thanks for the award, Kornel Morawiecki evoked some dramatic moments from the past, such as the Battle of Warsaw and the Polish assistance provided to the Hungarian insurgents of 1956. He expressed an ambition for both nations to meet the great challenges of the future by playing an important role in an ever-changing Europe.

The Hungarian Cross of Merit is a high State Order, initially awarded between 1922 and 1945. The Hungarian Order of Merit was revived in 1991. The President of Hungary is always the Grand Master and holds the Hungarian Order of Merit Grand Cross with Chain and Golden Radiant Star.
